Two New Majors Prepare Students for Global Service

Covenant students can now major in German studies and in international studies. These new majors follow the recent additions of a theatre major, a political studies minor and concentration, programs in design and marketing, and the master of arts in teaching program.

The international studies program is multi-disciplinary, with strong foreign language and research methods components. “The challenge for this, like any multi-disciplinary program, is to balance the intrinsic breadth with sufficient depth,” says Professor Cale Horne, advisor for the international studies program. “We do this by focusing on the core disciplines of history, economics and politics, as opposed to the ‘broad umbrella’ approaches taken by some international studies programs.” Professor Horne notes that the program is a strong fit for students who want to pursue careers in government, law, international organizations, the military and academia, among others.

The German studies program is not strictly a foreign language major, but includes courses in continental philosophy, European history and political science. Professor Tom Neiles, advisor for the German studies program, notes that cross-cultural competence and multilingual skills are highly valued in potential employees. “German is the most widely-spoken first language in Europe, with over 120 million speakers,” says Neiles. “German is required for scholars to be able to conduct research in such fields as missions, economics, philosophy, history, theology, engineering, medicine and literature. The strong German economy and the huge German–American trade partnership provide compelling reasons for instituting this major.”

“The academic program at Covenant College continues to develop in line with the strategic plan initiative of making connections beyond the campus,” says Dr. Jeff Hall, vice president for academic affairs. “These two programs will strengthen our offerings as we more directly engage a global perspective.”

Tax-Notification Forms

The 1098-T tax-notification forms are now available on your daughter's or son’s Banner account, which you can access if your child has shared their login information with you. The menu item is titled “Tax Notifications” and is on the "Student Records" menu. In January, we delivered paper copies of these forms to your son's or daughter’s campus mailbox and sent them an e-mail requesting that they send the paper copy to you if you pay their account at the College. Please feel free to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Covenant Parent Testimony

As parents of two children, Rachel ’10 and Luke ’14, who received a home school education, we were naturally concerned about where they chose to attend college. Although we were pleased with their choice of Covenant College, it seemed to be beyond our reach financially.  However, in answer to our prayers God provided through scholarships and student employment to make it possible for Rachel and Luke to be able to attend Covenant College.

One of our concerns about college was that Rachel and Luke would experience intellectual growth, without compromising their biblical foundation.  Covenant has gone far beyond our expectations.  A moving example of this came during the Friday service of student orientation, when parents were invited to pray publicly for their children’s educational experience at Covenant. It was also comforting to know that even before our children had arrived on campus that both faculty and staff had a prayer walk over the campus praying for each student by name.

There has never been a single case in which Rachel and Luke were exposed to anything less than a high view of God and Scripture.  Furthermore, Covenant’s biblical worldview has not come at the expense of academic excellence. Both Rachel and Luke were and are challenged to do their best by professors, who take pride and value their students’ educational progress.  Our children discovered that their professors wanted to be a part of their lives.  Rachel and Luke have had the privilege of being in some of their professors’ homes and sharing meals with them. Both benefited from their professors’ ready assistance.  It has been refreshing to be out in the community with Rachel and/or Luke and run into a professor who called them by name and expressed genuine concern about what was going on in their lives.

Another area of concern as a parent was Rachel and Luke’s college social life.  Our family understands that the Christian life is to be lived in the world, not of the world.  Furthermore, rightly living out our walk with Christ requires friends, who share our Christian worldview.  Rachel and Luke have found and are finding such friends at Covenant.   Covenant encourages students in their social development through different planned activities and events.  Covenant College has also provided opportunities that have helped Rachel and Luke to further develop their leadership skills.  Luke has been able to play on the baseball team, where he has developed close friends.  These coaches have been godly examples for these young men, who are coached to become Christ-centered men. It has been encouraging to witness the growth of both Rachel and Luke’s social skills as they have developed friendships with others who share their love for Christ and life.

An added bonus of attending Covenant College has been its breathtaking location.  The campus has the feel of an inspiring mountain retreat rather than a cold establishment of higher learning.  In short, Covenant College has been a hand-glove fit for Rachel and Luke, providing them an enriching learning environment where Christ is preeminent, academic excellence is encouraged, and each student is valued.
